Building a Futuristic, Multi-User Interactive Motion Tracking Zone at MMU Cyberjaya

Academic institutions and enterprise innovation hubs frequently face the limits of conventional virtual reality setups. While standard consumer VR headsets and traditional optical motion-capture rigs have their place, they often isolate users behind bulky head-mounted displays or require restrictive wearable suits.

When Multimedia University (MMU) and TM One sought an out-of-the-box, pioneering installation for the TM One Innovation Centre at MMU, they envisioned an interactive facility reminiscent of futuristic spatial interfaces seen in cinema—a shared, natural environment where educators, students, and researchers can interact simultaneously without feeling cut off from each other.

In response, THEXRA partnered with TrueXR to engineer and custom-build an Interactive Motion Tracking Zone from scratch.

Technical Architecture & Core Capabilities

The custom installation transforms a large shared physical space into a responsive, real-time interactive canvas:

1. Ceiling-Integrated Optical-Inertial Tracking (Antilatency)

  • Active Ceiling Sensor Grid: A network of low-profile tracking strips is mounted across the ceiling, delivering a wide active capture volume without intrusive floor cabling or perimeter tripods.
  • Ultra-Lightweight Trackers: Wearable active markers allow the system to continuously capture user head and hand poses with millimeter accuracy and near-zero latency.
  • 6-Degrees-of-Freedom (6-DoF) Free-Roam: Users can walk, inspect, and gesture naturally throughout the room while their spatial coordinates are calculated in real time.

2. Multi-User Immersion via Curved Wall Projection Mapping

  • Shared Visual Canvas: High-resolution projectors wrap around a custom curved wall surface, eliminating visual edge distortion through precise spatial mapping and edge blending.
  • Synchronized 3D Active Glasses: Lightweight active 3D glasses provide stereoscopic depth perception directly from the projected surface.
  • Concurrent Multi-User Experience: The tracking engine and display infrastructure support up to 6 simultaneous users inside the tracking zone, preserving eye contact and spontaneous collaboration.

3. Open Development Pipeline with Unity SDK

  • Real-Time Interactive Content: Fully integrated with the Unity game engine and Antilatency SDK, allowing students, faculty, and enterprise creators to deploy custom interactive applications rapidly.
  • Cross-Disciplinary R&D: Serves as an open testbed for spatial computing research, interactive digital media development, architectural walkthroughs, and simulations.

Educational & Operational Impact

  • Pioneering Campus Technology: Delivered a signature showcase facility that differentiates MMU as a forward-thinking academic institution in spatial computing and digital interactive media.
  • Collaborative Group Learning: Shifted immersive technology from an isolating single-person VR experience to an open, group-oriented collaborative environment.
  • Turnkey Custom Engineering: Demonstrated THEXRA's end-to-end capability to design, fabricate, calibrate, and integrate specialized spatial hardware and software from the ground up.
